10 Common Appliance Problems & How to Fix Them

Learn about the most frequent appliance issues homeowners face and simple troubleshooting steps before calling a professional.

1. Refrigerator Not Cooling Properly

If your refrigerator isn't maintaining the right temperature, start by checking the thermostat setting. Clean the condenser coils located at the back or bottom of the unit. In the desert climate, dust buildup happens faster than in coastal areas. If the problem persists, you may have a faulty compressor or refrigerant leak that requires professional attention.

2. Washer Not Draining

A washing machine that won't drain often has a clogged drain hose or pump filter. Check for small items like coins or socks that may have gotten lodged in the drain pump. If you hear a humming sound during the drain cycle, the pump motor may need replacement.

3. Dryer Not Heating

When your dryer tumbles but doesn't produce heat, the heating element or thermal fuse may be blown. For gas dryers, check that the gas supply valve is open. Regular lint trap and vent cleaning can prevent many heating issues.

4. Dishwasher Leaving Dishes Dirty

If dishes come out dirty, check the spray arms for clogs and clean the filter at the bottom of the tub. Make sure you're using the right amount of detergent and that water temperature is at least 120°F at the dishwasher inlet.

5. Oven Temperature Inaccurate

An oven that runs too hot or too cold likely has a faulty temperature sensor or calibration issue. You can test this with an oven thermometer. If off by more than 25 degrees, professional recalibration or sensor replacement is recommended.

6. Microwave Not Heating

A microwave that runs but doesn't heat usually has a failed magnetron, diode, or capacitor. These components carry dangerous high voltage — always call a professional for microwave repairs.

7. Freezer Frost Buildup

Excessive frost in your freezer typically indicates a problem with the defrost system — either the defrost heater, thermostat, or timer. Check door seals for gaps that let warm air in.

8. Garbage Disposal Jammed

Most disposal jams can be cleared using the hex wrench that came with the unit. Insert it into the bottom of the disposal and turn back and forth to free the impellers. Never put your hand inside the disposal.

9. Washer Vibrating Excessively

Excessive vibration usually means the washer is not level or the load is unbalanced. Check the leveling feet and redistribute the laundry. Worn shock absorbers or suspension springs can also cause this issue.

10. Refrigerator Making Strange Noises

Clicking, buzzing, or humming noises from your refrigerator can indicate issues with the condenser fan, evaporator fan, or compressor. Some noises are normal, but persistent loud sounds should be investigated by a professional.
