Dishwasher Not Cleaning Dishes? Here's What to Check

Dishes coming out dirty or filmy after a wash cycle? The cause is often simpler than you think. Here are the most common culprits and fixes for Coachella Valley homes.

Why Your Dishwasher Is Leaving Dishes Dirty

Few things are more frustrating than unloading your dishwasher only to find food residue, white film, or greasy spots on dishes you thought were clean. Before you assume your dishwasher is broken, know that most cleaning problems have straightforward causes — and many of them are amplified by the hard water and dusty conditions here in the Coachella Valley. Let us walk through the most common reasons your dishwasher is not performing and what you can do about each one.

Clogged or Dirty Filter

This is the number one cause of poor dishwasher performance, and it is also the easiest to fix. Most modern dishwashers have a removable filter at the bottom of the tub. If you have never cleaned it — or did not even know it existed — there is a good chance it is clogged with food particles, grease, and mineral deposits. In the Coachella Valley, hard water minerals accumulate in the filter even faster than food debris.

To clean the filter, remove the lower rack, twist and lift out the cylindrical filter assembly, and wash it under running water with a soft brush. You should be doing this at least once a month. If your filter is heavily calcified, soak it in white vinegar for 30 minutes before scrubbing.

Blocked Spray Arms

The spray arms have small holes that shoot water at your dishes during the wash cycle. Over time, these holes get clogged with mineral deposits, food particles, and hard water scale. This is especially problematic in the Coachella Valley, where our water is loaded with calcium and magnesium.

Remove each spray arm — they usually twist or snap off — and hold them up to the light. If you cannot see through the holes, they are clogged. Use a toothpick, thin wire, or needle to clear each hole individually. Soak the spray arms in vinegar if the buildup is severe. While the arms are off, check that they spin freely on their mounts.

Water Temperature Too Low

Dishwashers need water that enters at a minimum of 120°F to dissolve grease and activate detergent properly. If your water heater is set too low, or if the dishwasher is far from the water heater, water may arrive too cool. Test this by running your kitchen faucet on hot until it reaches full temperature, then start the dishwasher. This ensures the first fill of the cycle uses hot water rather than lukewarm water from the pipes.

In some Coachella Valley homes with tankless water heaters, there can be a delay before hot water reaches the dishwasher. Running the hot faucet first eliminates this problem.

Wrong Detergent or Too Much Detergent

Using the wrong detergent or too much of it can actually make cleaning worse. Excess detergent creates too many suds, which cushion the water spray and reduce its cleaning power. It also leaves a soapy film on dishes. If you have a water softener, you may need even less detergent than the package recommends.

Conversely, if you do not have a water softener, the hard water in the Coachella Valley requires more detergent — or a detergent specifically formulated for hard water — to clean effectively. Tablet or pod detergents tend to perform better in hard water than liquid or powder.

Hard Water Film and Spots

White, chalky film on glasses and dishes is a hallmark of hard water — and the Coachella Valley has some of the hardest water in Southern California. This is not a malfunction of your dishwasher; it is a water chemistry problem. Solutions include using a rinse aid in every cycle to prevent water spots, adding a dishwasher water softener product to your wash, installing a whole-home water softener system, and running monthly cleaning cycles with citric acid or a commercial dishwasher descaler.

If the white film has built up over months, you may need to run several cleaning cycles to remove the accumulated scale from the interior walls, spray arms, and heating element.

Improper Loading

How you load your dishwasher matters more than you might think. Overloading prevents water from reaching all surfaces. Nesting bowls together, blocking spray arm rotation with tall items, or placing large pans over the detergent dispenser are all common mistakes. Make sure dishes face the spray arms, leave space between items for water circulation, and do not block the detergent dispenser door.

When to Call a Professional

If you have cleaned the filter, cleared the spray arms, verified water temperature, and adjusted your detergent but dishes are still coming out dirty, the problem may be mechanical. A failing wash motor, a broken water inlet valve, a malfunctioning detergent dispenser, or a faulty control board all require professional diagnosis. We see these issues regularly across our service area, from Indian Wells to Bermuda Dunes, and most can be repaired in a single visit.
