Oven Not Heating Properly? Causes and Solutions

An oven that will not heat — or heats unevenly — has a handful of common causes. Learn what to check yourself and when to call a professional for safe, effective repair.

Diagnosing an Oven That Will Not Heat

Whether you are baking a birthday cake in Palm Desert or roasting a holiday turkey in La Quinta, an oven that will not heat properly throws a wrench in your plans. The good news is that oven heating problems usually have identifiable causes, and most repairs are straightforward for a qualified technician. Before you call for service, here is what you should know about why ovens fail to heat and what you can safely check yourself.

Gas Oven: Faulty Igniter

The igniter is the most common cause of a gas oven not heating. The igniter serves two functions: it opens the gas safety valve and then ignites the gas. Over time, igniters weaken and cannot draw enough electrical current to open the gas valve, even though they may still glow. A weak igniter may take several minutes to light the oven, or it may glow orange without ever igniting the gas.

Signs of a failing igniter include the oven taking more than 60 seconds to ignite, the igniter glowing but gas never lighting, the oven not reaching the set temperature, or hearing gas flowing but seeing no flame. Igniter replacement is one of the most common oven repairs we perform across the Coachella Valley. The part itself is relatively inexpensive, and the repair typically takes 30 to 45 minutes.

Safety note: If you smell gas and the oven will not light, turn off the oven, open windows, and leave the house. Call your gas company before calling an appliance repair service. Do not try to diagnose a gas leak yourself.

Electric Oven: Broken Heating Element

Electric ovens use metal heating elements for both baking (bottom element) and broiling (top element). When a heating element fails, it may show visible signs such as blistering, cracking, or a break in the element coil. Sometimes the element will spark or short out before failing completely.

You can visually inspect the elements by looking inside the oven. A working element should glow uniformly red when the oven is on. If you see dark spots, uneven glowing, or areas that do not glow at all, the element needs replacement. In some cases, the element may look fine visually but test as faulty with a multimeter. Heating element replacement is a common and relatively affordable repair, typically ranging from $150 to $300 including parts and labor.

Temperature Sensor or Thermostat Issues

The oven temperature sensor is a thin metal probe, usually located at the top rear of the oven interior. It monitors the oven temperature and signals the control board to cycle the heating element or gas burner on and off to maintain the set temperature. If the sensor fails or becomes inaccurate, the oven may run too hot, too cold, or not heat at all.

You can do a basic test by preheating your oven to 350 degrees and checking the actual temperature with a separate oven thermometer. If the temperature is off by more than 25 degrees, the sensor may need recalibration or replacement. Temperature sensors are usually inexpensive parts, though the diagnostic work to confirm the sensor is the problem — rather than the control board — requires professional testing.

Oven Calibration

Sometimes the oven heats but runs consistently too hot or too cold by a moderate amount — say 15 to 30 degrees. This does not necessarily mean a part has failed. Many ovens allow you to adjust the temperature calibration through the control panel. Check your owner's manual for instructions. Typically, you hold down a specific button or combination of buttons to enter calibration mode, then adjust the offset up or down. This is a free fix that solves many temperature accuracy complaints.

Control Board Failure

Modern ovens rely on electronic control boards to manage temperature, cooking modes, timers, and self-cleaning functions. When the control board fails, symptoms can range from the oven not heating at all to error codes on the display, buttons not responding, or the oven overheating and not shutting off. In the Coachella Valley, power surges during summer storms are a common cause of control board damage. Using a surge protector on your range can help prevent this expensive repair, which typically costs $250 to $500.

Oven Door Issues

An oven that heats but cannot maintain temperature may have a door problem. If the door does not close completely or the door gasket is worn, heat escapes and the oven struggles to reach and hold the set temperature. Check that the door hinges are not bent or loose and that the gasket around the door frame is intact and not hardened or cracked. Desert heat can dry out oven door gaskets faster than in humid climates, so inspect yours annually.

What You Can Safely Do Yourself

There are a few oven troubleshooting steps that are safe for homeowners to perform. Check that the oven is properly plugged in and that the circuit breaker has not tripped. For gas ovens, verify that the gas supply valve is open. Visually inspect heating elements for visible damage. Test the oven temperature with an oven thermometer. And clean the oven to remove any food debris that may be causing smoke or odors that you might be mistaking for a malfunction.

When to Call a Professional

Any repair involving gas lines, electrical wiring, sealed components, or the replacement of parts should be handled by a licensed technician. Gas oven repairs in particular carry safety risks that make DIY work inadvisable.
