Common Samsung Appliance Problems and How We Fix Them

Samsung appliances are popular in the Coachella Valley but come with their own quirks. Learn about the most common Samsung issues and what you can do about them.

Samsung Appliances: Popular but Not Problem-Free

Samsung has become one of the most popular appliance brands in homes across Palm Springs, La Quinta, and the greater Coachella Valley. Their sleek designs and smart features are appealing, but Samsung appliances also have some well-documented problem areas. As technicians who service Samsung units daily across the desert region, we have seen every issue these machines can produce. Here is what you should know about the most common Samsung appliance problems and how we address them.

Samsung Refrigerator Ice Maker Failures

This is by far the most common Samsung complaint we hear from homeowners in the Coachella Valley. Samsung's ice maker design — particularly in their French-door models from 2014 onward — has been the subject of a class-action lawsuit and widespread frustration. Common symptoms include ice clumping together in the bucket, the ice maker freezing over completely, small or misshapen ice cubes, and the ice maker stopping production entirely.

In the Coachella Valley, these problems are made worse by our hard water. Mineral deposits accumulate inside the ice maker assembly and water inlet valve, accelerating failures. Our technicians address this by defrosting the ice maker compartment, replacing the ice maker assembly if needed, inspecting and cleaning the water inlet valve, and in some cases installing an inline water filter to reduce mineral buildup.

DIY tip: If your Samsung ice maker freezes over, you can try a force defrost. Press and hold the Energy Saver and Fridge buttons simultaneously for about 8 seconds until the display goes blank, then press the Fridge button repeatedly until "Fd" appears on the display. This initiates a forced defrost cycle. If this fixes the problem only temporarily, you likely need a professional repair.

Samsung Washer Vibration and Error Codes

Samsung front-load washers are known for excessive vibration, especially during the spin cycle. In many Coachella Valley homes — where tile and concrete slab floors are common — the vibration can be intense enough to move the washer across the laundry room. Common causes include worn shock absorbers, unbalanced suspension rods, and the machine not being properly leveled.

Frequent Samsung washer error codes we see include:

  • UE or UB: Unbalanced load. Redistribute the laundry and try again. If it persists, the suspension system may need repair.
  • SE or 5E: Drain error. Check the drain filter at the bottom front of the machine for debris. Desert sand and dust can contribute to clogs.
  • HE or HE1: Heating error. The water heater element or thermistor may need replacement.
  • DC: Door lock error. The door latch assembly or control board connection may be faulty.

DIY tip: For the SE drain error, open the small access panel at the bottom front of the washer, place towels underneath, and slowly open the drain filter cap. Remove any debris, including coins, lint, and sand. This is one of the easiest Samsung fixes you can do yourself.

Samsung Dishwasher Problems

Samsung dishwashers in the Coachella Valley frequently develop issues related to our hard water. The most common complaints include dishes not getting clean, water pooling at the bottom after cycles, and error codes appearing on the display.

Key Samsung dishwasher error codes:

  • HE or HE1: Water heating issue. The heating element or thermistor is likely faulty.
  • OC or 0C: Overfill condition. The water inlet valve may be stuck open or the water level sensor is malfunctioning.
  • LC or LE: Leak detected. Check underneath the unit for water and inspect the door gasket and spray arm connections.
  • 1E: Water level sensor error. This often requires professional diagnosis.

Hard water scale builds up on spray arms, heating elements, and the interior walls of Samsung dishwashers much faster in our region. We recommend running a dishwasher cleaning cycle with citric acid or a commercial descaler every two weeks if you do not have a water softener installed.

Samsung Dryer Issues

Samsung dryers generally perform well in the Coachella Valley, but the most common issue we see is the dryer not heating. This is typically caused by a blown thermal fuse, a worn heating element, or a faulty thermistor. Desert dust can also clog the internal ductwork and lint pathways faster than in other climates, reducing airflow and triggering the thermal fuse to blow as a safety measure.

When to Call a Professional

While some Samsung issues have simple DIY solutions, many require specialized tools and knowledge. Samsung's electronic control boards, sealed refrigerant systems, and smart home integration add complexity that goes beyond basic troubleshooting. If your DIY attempt does not resolve the issue, or if you see error codes you do not recognize, it is time to call a professional who has experience with Samsung appliances. Our technicians carry Samsung-specific diagnostic tools and common replacement parts, so most repairs can be completed in a single visit.
